Em’s Art Shack

Welcome to Em’s Art Shack!  We offer weekly art classes to school aged children and adults, in addition to school break and summer camps!

What’s happening now?

We are currently promoting our February Break Camp (Feb 19th – 23rd) as well as our weekly classes, which will begin the week of February 26th!

New this spring – Emily will no longer be teaching on Mondays and Fridays so she can focus on creating her own work. Please take a look at her new teaching schedule!

February Break Camp: Make your own battery operated clock and learn how to read it, too! 10am-1pm

Did you know that most kids don’t know how to tell time on an old clock?!  This week our campers will be designing, creating and learning how to tell time on a good old fashioned clock!  How they build their clocks will depend on their design, but most will be use coiling, pinch pot and slab rolled clay to create their clocks.  Will they be wall clocks, or will they be free standing?  That’s entirely up to the artist!

February break morning camp begins at 10am so the studio can warm up before the artists arrive. Each day we will break for lunch and some free play time before heading back into the studio to complete the work of the day.  When our pieces are complete, we will paint them with underglazes and load them into the kiln!  When we are finished cleaning up, we will head outside to play until pickup time at 1.

PLEASE send your artist in with their snow gear – complete with snowpants and boots, as we WILL play outside in the snow if we have any!

This camp is intended for school aged children ages 5 and up!

Cost: $150/week for 10am-1pm clock camp, which includes all materials and firing fees.

Covid: We will follow the CDC guidelines for Covid protocols.

*Camp tuition reminders will be sent out once you register.  No payment is required at this time.

February Break Camp: Afternoon Pottery Camp

This afternoon pottery camp is a chance for your artist to try their hand at throwing pottery on the wheel! This is a basic introduction to pottery for those who have not thrown before.  If your artist has already thrown on the wheel, this is a chance for them to practice their skills and to help teach new students how to throw.  Some days they will find success, and others, they will walk away with just the experience, as pottery is a hard skill to learn!  All in all, it’s going to be an afternoon filled with fun and outdoor adventure during our break.

PLEASE send your artist in with their snow gear – complete with snowpants and boots, as we WILL play outside in the snow if we have any!

This camp is intended for school aged children ages 5 and up! (This is a rare opportunity for young artists)

Cost: $150/week for 1pm-4pm pottery camp, which includes all materials and firing fees.

Covid: We will follow the CDC guidelines for Covid protocols.

*Camp tuition reminders will be sent out once you register.  No payment is required at this time.

Clay Club

Clay Club is a hand building class where we focus on coiling, pinch pots and slab building our creations out of clay.  Each month I provide a theme and each student designs their own project.  We start with drawing their concepts and then we formulate a plan for how they are going to turn their drawings into 3 dimensional projects.  Each artist comes out with their own unique masterpiece!

Em’s Art Shack is located 6 houses away from the middle school on Gray Avenue! I will greet them with an afternoon snack and a little free play time before we jump into clay!

Clay Club for Homeschool Kids

This Clay Club is specifically for our community’s homeschool kids! This is a hand building class where we focus on coiling, pinch pots and slab building our creations out of clay.  Each month I provide a theme and each student designs their own project.  We start with drawing their concepts and then we formulate a plan for how they are going to turn their drawings into 3 dimensional projects.  Each artist comes out with their own unique masterpiece!

The themes for this club will vary by individual.  We will determine what sorts of things they are interested in, and we will create projects around those ideas.

I am currently offering this Club on Thursdays from 10:30 – Noon.

Classes are limited to 8 students.  These classes are for kids 5 years and up.

Cost: $75/month*

*Monthly tuition reminders will be sent out the first week of each session.  No payment is required at this time.

Homeschool Pottery Club (Ages 10+)

This pottery club teaches all aspects of clay.  We will have sessions where we focus entirely on learning how to throw pottery on the wheel, and other sessions will focus on creating hand built masterpieces.  Beginners are welcome, but they must have an open mind for learning through failure.  Pottery is a VERY difficult skill to master, so having an open mind to accept that some days, the experience alone may be all that you have to show for your efforts.

Each week, our class begins with a wheel demo and I will work with each artist to help them to achieve that form.  In addition to learning pottery skills, each artist will learn the ins and outs of the clay studio: How to wedge and recycle clay, clean up their wheels, load kilns and keep a tidy studio. My hope for this class is for artists to learn throwing techniques to build functional pottery to be used for a lifetime!

We are offering this class on Thursdays from Noon to 1:30.

Classes are limited to 6 students.  These classes are for kids ages 10+.

Cost: $75/month

*Monthly tuition reminders will be sent out the first week of each session.  No payment is required at this time.

Covid: We will follow the CDC guidelines for Covid protocols.  If your child is not feeling well, please keep them home.
